Concerns that “Superman Returns” wouldn’t live up to it’s own over zealous hype have - over the last couple of days - been phased out. The critics’ opinions have largely been very positive with Jeffrey Wells of Hollywood Elsewhere hailing it as a “better film than [Superman] part I or part II” and the infamous Harry Knowles of Ain’t it Cool News stating that the film was what he “was hoping and dreaming for.” Negative opinions have been few and far between, indicating that “Superman Returns” is the one summer blockbuster that has managed to reach and possibly exceed expectations.

After the release of “Jackass: The Movie” in 2002 it seemed that the whole Jackass saga had reached maturity and was on it’s way out. But some new footage has surfaced on the official Jackass movie site, indicating that there is, infact, a sequel on it’s way. Judging by the main trailer, “Jackass Number Two” seems to feature the same formula of mischevious and extreme shenanigans that we have come to expect from the crew (oh yes, they’re all there - Knoxville, Bam, Steve-O and co.) and according to the site, will reach US theatres on September 22. The main trailer can be viewed on Yahoo Movies and there is also some additional footage on the official Jackass site.

Controversial US rapper Eminem, is taking a step to further himself in the movie industry by agreeing to star in a modern day adaption of old TV western, “Have Gun Will Travel”. Mr Mathers (Eminem) will be playing a bounty hunter and will have a hard act to follow, thanks to Richard Boone’s Paladin heroics back in 1957. “When this property essentially became available we discussed it and brought it to Marshall and he was very intrigued and excited about the concept,” said Mather’s manager Paul Rosenberg. As excited as he was about 8 Mile? Well, it should be good then…

As the title suggests, “Reeker” is a movie that revolves around a bad smell – perhaps not the most riveting of subjects but at least something seemingly unique. If somebody described the atmosphere that Dave Payne wanted to create, out loud, then it would come across as impossible to convey properly via the silver screen; you can’t see a smell, so how can it be utilized well enough to feature heavily in a horror movie? Well, Payne came up with an answer to the question his subject matter posed and after a late night viewing of his conclusion, I was inhaling the bittersweet smell of indecision.

The first “Hostel” was a film that split the audience down the middle, a lot of people loved it but similiarly, a lot of people hated it. Rotten Tomatoes reports that at the recent MTV Movie Awards, Eli Roth confided a few details about a sequel to the first film and he expressed the fact that the gender roles of the first film will be turned on their head and that he is “writing ‘Hostel 2′ for girls”, “it’s going to be three girls this time” he added. The film will, like the first, take place in Europe, but this time will choose to set itself up in Italy and promises to be just as gruesome and cringeworthy as the original.

Last Weekend saw Pixar’s latest effort “Cars” top the US box office with a respectable $62.8 million, it stole the top spot away from “The Break-Up” (Jennifer Aniston, Vince Vaughan) which only managed to gross $20.5 million in it’s second week. Rival animation studio Dreamworks, recently released “Over the Hedge” which has currently accrued $130.4 million during the 4 weeks since it’s release - whether “Cars” can go onto surpass these figures is yet to be seen, but it’s opening weekend has dwarfed “Over the Hedge’s” decidely average $38.5 million.

Anyone with an ounce of intelligence could have easily predicted that a western remake of controversial Japanese action/horror flick Battle Royale would be on the cards at some point in the future. Kinji Fukasaku’s original quickly became a cult hit with Asian Extreme fans and has enjoyed a successful run in the DVD market, so the inevitability of a re-make was evident. The studio that stepped forward to close the deal was New Line and that’s pretty much all we know so far - apart from the fact that Neil Moritz and Roy Lee will be producing the project, but taking a look at their previous work, I think it’s best to try and ignore that piece of information.

Hellboy has been picked up by Paramount after Sony decided that they didn’t want to be responsible for the sequel to the first film, which was based upon Mike Mignola’s Hellboy comic books. The film community remains skeptical as to whether a sequel is necessary, but Guillermo Del Toro, who is set to direct again, seems determined to see the project through. He gave his current take on the situation to Rotten Tomatoes.

On paper, the premise for The Ringer seems inordinately politically incorrect and offensive, certainly too controversial for a major studio to pick up. But Fox along with Conundrum Entertainment, the people that brought us Stuck on You, translated the ultimate in bad taste into a credibly comedic motion picture – or at least, that’s how the situation was read prior to release.
