Trailer Round-Up #1

After having taken a 2 week hiatus from the western world, I felt I’d better catch up on all the trailers I missed whilst I was away. So today I got down to business and sat through a veritable host of videos, from which I have picked some of the more competent and interesting offerings to impose my opinions upon. During the process, despite sitting through trailers ranging from very good to almost suicide worthy, I decided that I may make this a regular monthly feature, hence the #1 in the title. Anyway, without further ado.

The Departed
Another star studded, high-octane thriller from Scorsese. The trailer gives a promising impression of a movie which I, surprisingly, haven’t heard much about. There seems to be the usual tangle of connected plotlines which are no doubt building up to an explosive denouement and as already mentioned, the high profile cast looks as if they may have delivered some characteristically competent performances. Just don’t let the awful country music at the end of the trailer put you off.

Borat
Already shaping up to be the pinnacle of risque and crass humour, Borat will no doubt be a box office success and if this new full trailer is anything to go by, it will probably deserve it (because it looks pretty damn funny). Discard your pretentious facade for just a moment and revel in the delights of uncomfortable comedy.

Crank
Crank is simple, it’s Jason Statham sans the dodgy American accent, which can mean only one thing - this film is going to be pure entertainment. Whether it’s your basic superficial action thriller or whether it has more substance to it, Crank is looking good. Hell, the trailer’s hectic enough to get anyone excited.

Running With Scissors
I couldn’t really figure this one out - the trailer seems to give two sides to the film. The first is a depressing and cliched side detailing a family unit breakdown and the second seems to be that of a light-hearted comedy, an unusual combination to be sure. I would label this as one to keep an eye on.

The Science of Sleep
Created by the director of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and starring Gael García Bernal from international hit Amores Perros, The Science of Sleep is nothing less than intruiging. This looks like creativity at it’s best, which is fitting because in dreams, nothing is out of bounds and it seems that the plot runs closely along a similiar vein. Gondry has obviously let his imagination run wild, I just hope he has managed to support that notion with a solid foundation so that we can all enjoy, what I hope will be, a unique and entertaining experience.
