Robert Downey Jr. is Pretty Hard

September 29th, 2006
The Iron Man

Robert Downey Jr. will soon live the popular “being clad entirely in metal” young boy’s dream when - in 2008 - he assumes the role of billionaire Marvel superhero, The Iron Man (Of no relation to Testuo: The Iron Man). The movie, which is to be directed by Jon Favreau and is also going to be the first self-financed Marvel project, is expected to grace the theatres sometime in 2008, whilst production will begin in February next year. Plot-wise, Variety - as always - unearthed the facts: “In the comics, Stark was an alcoholic, a trait that will undoubtedly draw public comparisons with Downey’s own struggles with substance abuse. However, Feige said the first pic won’t deal with Stark’s alcohol problems, though it would likely come up in potential sequels. [The] first film will deal with Stark’s invention of the Iron Man suit and his conflicted past as a weapons inventor.”

Astonishing “300″ Promo Trailer

September 21st, 2006
300

A promo trailer for Zack Snyder’s big screen adaption of the graphic novel “300″ by Frank Miller, was posted exclusively today over at Movies For The Masses and all I can say is…well, it looks jaw-dropping. The movie follows a group of 300 Spartan warriors - some of the world’s most elite soldiers - who are chosen meet an advancing Persian army in battle in order to effectively stall them before an invasion of Greece. Grossly outnumbered and almost certain to die, the Spartans fight regardless, believing in the mantra that a Spartan’s greatest honour is to die in battle. But anyway, back to details about the 3 minute snippet itself, which I must reiterate, is juicy enough to drool over. I keep telling myself it’s too early to predict whether Snyder’s project is actually going to be as epic and intense as it comes across in the promo - but realistically, after witnessing such a spectacle, I can’t see it straying very far from the mark.

Philips Working on Old School Dos

September 14th, 2006
Old School

Director and screenwriter of the original “Old School”, Todd Philips has decided to let us all know that he is hard at work on a sequel, which currently bears the name “Old School Dos”. Although none of the stars involved in the last film have signed onto the project thus far, Philips intends to present the finished script to Will Ferrel, Vince Vaughan and Luke Wilson as soon as he gets the chance. As for the plot, /Film reports that the movie “follows Mitch, Beanie and Frank as they open the fraternity doors to a new generation of college students.” There are no dates set for production and so forth, as of yet - unsurprisingly because the movie is of course not finished - but I shall keep you posted. I wouldn’t want to deprive you of any Will Ferrell news anyway.

September 14th, 2006
Oldboy

Tartan Video have revealed an upcoming 3 disc edition of Oldboy scheduled for a November 14th release. The set will feature all of the usual different incarnations of the movie, 3 commentaries from the director and cast etc, 10 deleted scenes, 6 featurettes which cover the story of Oldboy from it’s cinematic inception right through production and up until release, a video diary covering each day of the film’s production entitled “The Autobiography Of Oldboy”, a 35mm film frame card and finally the original Oldboy manga - all of this will be encased in your own very own metal case (joy!). And if that’s not enough for you, well, then you’re way too demanding. The expected price of the set is $39.99.

Fraser for The Mummy 3

September 12th, 2006
The Mummy

Rick O’Connell, everyone’s favourite adventurer, may be hitting our screens once again in the third movie of what would consequently be, The Mummy trilogy. According to Rotten Tomatoes, rumours have been circulating that Brendan Fraser has already signed on to do the project and that filming may start as soon as next spring. The script is going to be penned by Smallville partners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar and will apparently be offering us a slightly original spin on what we’ve already seen. Sadly, Rachel Weisz and Oded Fehr are yet to be connected with the project, but Weisz did recently say to French site EcranLarge.com that she knows there’s a new script, but hasn’t read it yet. Catch the Catch a Fire Trailer

September 9th, 2006
Catch a Fire

It just came to my attention that you can catch (I know, I know) the newly uploaded trailer for Philip Noyce’s upcoming “Catch a Fire”, over at the official Working Title Films site - it possesses an interesting premise and looks to have been executed with typical Noyce style. Anyway, set in the 1980’s during South Africa’s Apartheid-era, “Catch a Fire” is a drama based on the true story of Patrick Chamusso, that revolves around a policeman and a young man that carry out individual attacks against the Government. Starring Tim Robbins, Derek Luke and Bonnie Henna, “Catch a Fire” is scheduled for an October release in the US and an early 2007 release everywhere else.

War Games 2 Confirmed

September 7th, 2006
War Games

Amongst a host of announcements for upcoming sequels including Legally Blonde 3, Cutting Edge 3, Into the Blue 2 and Species 4, MGM have revealed that a sequel to 1983’s cult hit, War Games, is on the cards. A recent press release stated that the movie is “Scheduled to begin shooting in Montreal in November” and will be a “thrilling story of what happens when top officials try to dismantle the famous computer.” As /Film quite soundly put it, it does look like some kind of “half-ass made for television or direct to dvd feature” - well, I couldn’t agree more. The first film was pretty decent and a crappy sequel will ruin it’s legacy.

Taiyo No Kizu Trailer Online

September 6th, 2006
Takashi Miike

The official trailer for Takashi Miike’s next upcoming flick, Taiyo No Kizu (Scars on the Sun) starring Sho Aikawa, has gone live and can be seen over at Japanese movie site CinemaParadise.co.jp. Plot information is rather scarce at the moment, especially because of the relatively cryptic description on the official site, but judging by this trailer it’s going to be another morbid, although presumably exciting, couple of hours from the Cult Legend. To find out more about the movie, visit the official site - however, if you can’t read Japanese you may want to try using babelfish.

Trailer Round-Up #2

September 3rd, 2006
Trailer Round-Up #2

The last round-up I did met with positive approval, so I will continue doing this as a monthly feature henceforth. Anyway, unsurprisingly, August was a month that brought us a multitude of delectable treats to drool over and no, before you mention it, I’m not talking about Snakes, Planes or anything of the Samuel L. Jackson variety. If you’re not going to read on without some kind of coherent description, think more along the lines of guns, motels, royalty and er, well, just read it.

The Hobbit Movie Scheduled?

September 1st, 2006
Lord of the Rings

A rumour indicating that New Line Cinema are planning to make a big screen adaption of the Lord of the Rings prequel “The Hobbit” have come to me today by way of Dark Horizons, having originally been cited at OneRing.net. The popular LotR fansite stated that one of their spies had managed to catch a glimpse of the upcoming New Line Cinema production schedule and that “The Hobbit” was down for a July 2007 production start. Dark Horizons believe that the rumour is very shaky and I feel inclined to agree, although if the project is legitimate then I sincerely hope that Peter Jackson will be getting his claws into it.
