Currently being billed as the next Shaun of the Dead, Fido provides a 1950s American take on the rapidly expanding zom-com genre. Starring Billy Connolly (Mrs Brown, The Last Samurai) Fido is the story of a kid called Timmy Robinson whose best friend just so happens to be a 6 foot zombie. In fact zombies are pretty much an every day part of life in Willard, they’ve been domesticated with the help of a collar developed by a company called Zomcon which allows the living to utilize zombies as gardeners, milkmen and whatever else they deem useful. But one day, Fido’s collar malfunctions and he ends up eating the Robinsons’ next door neighbour, what ensues is story of friendship, love and most enticingly, guts. Described by Anagram Pics as “a boy-and-his-dog movie for grown ups” Fido certainly doesn’t look as good as Shaun of the Dead, but the trailer does possess a certain charm and my unhealthy affinity for zombies will no doubt compel me to see it anyway. Daniel Radcliffe (he’s Harry Potter - just in case you didn’t know/are some kind of hermit) stars in this Rod Hardy-directed feature based on the Michael Noonan novel of the same title. Looking back on their childhood orphan experiences, the film’s now-adult narrators reflect on one particular summer at the sea, in which several boys competed against one another to be rescued from their Australian orphanage fate. Here’s some screen caps, stills and production shots. Read the rest of this entry »

We all knew that Sony would milk the spider-man franchise for all it happened to be worth, but 6 films?! It’s turning into Rocky. If we continue to work upon that logic then 4 will be average, 5 is going to suck as much as You Got Served and 6 will be a return to form albeit in a sentimental and predictable manner. Oh God, does this mean Peter Parker is going to have a really annoying son? I wonder who the Spider-man equivalent of Tommy Gunn is… Anyway, back to my original point, Sam Raimi had always mentioned that Sony would carry the franchise on for as long as possible, but in an article posted on Sunday, Sony Pictures chief executive Michael Lynton told the BBC: “Everybody has every intention of making a fourth, a fifth and a sixth and on and on.” So now it’s official. Recently banned Chinese filmmaker Lou Ye (Suzhou River, Purple Butterfly) will be able to take a little solace in the fact that Summer Palace (Yihe Yuan) - the film which caused the unfairly harsh 5 year ban - won the Golden Durian at the 9th Annual Barcelona Asian Film Festival last week. The film follows the events of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests intertwined with a tale of romance, leading up to the day’s tragic and brutal conclusion - hardly a subject which the Chinese censors would approve of, hence Ye’s inclination to submit the film to festivals without approval. It’s nice to see the film getting recognition anyway, especially since the Chinese authorities alleged it was banned because of “insufficient sound and image quality”…erm…sure. Found by one of the editors over at Twitch Film, it seems that The Korean Film Council have posted some interesting downloadable content on their English language site. The most notable freebies are a generous selection of extracts from ‘Korean Cinema: From Origins to Renaissance’, a book which details the history of Korean cinema beginning in the 1800s and concluding with the present day. Head on over to the site and click ‘Publications’ to get to the goods. Enjoy!

I don’t mean to bombard you with Spider-man news because it’s everywhere at the minute, but I thought it would be helpful to mention that instalment 3 has smashed box office records worldwide, successfully opening in over 100 countries. During the North American inaugural weekend, a whopping $148m was banked and elsewhere a further $227m rolled in, giving the film a 6 day total gross of $375m - approximately half of what Spider-man 2 earned in total. Essentially, it has already covered its huge production costs…it’s a pity it wasn’t very good to be honest. Read the rest of this entry »

Elisha Cuthbert (The Girl Next Door, Old School) plays a fashion icon (that’s what IMDB tells me anyway!) who is kidnapped and forced to endure a multitude of sick and twisted games which pray upon her childhood fears in this thriller from Roland Joffé, the guy that brought us Goodbye Lover, the Oscar-nominated Vatel and…ahem…Super Mario Bros. Also starring Daniel Gillies (Spider-man 2, Bride & Prejudice) and Laz Alonso (Constantine, Jarhead). Read the rest of this entry »

Well first off, I didn’t even know there was going to be a Spider-man 4, I’ve only just seen 3 for god’s sake, but apparently it’s already been planned and will go ahead with or without Sam Raimi at the helm. Secondly, Freeze Dried Movies has uncovered information (genuine or not, I am unsure) about the villains that will appear in this fourth instalment. Apparently Carnage (Cletus Kasady) will be making an appearance, which I have to admit would be pretty amazing considering he is one vicious bastard - I’m not sure how they’d work his personality into a 12A movie though, perhaps Spidey will get a certification upgrade. Anyway, head to Freeze Dried Movies for the full article. Read the rest of this entry »

Marvel’s attempt to resurrect The Hulk as a viable film property seems to be going rather well thus far, first of all they get the academy-award nominated Edward Norton to assume the role of David Banner (previously filled by the hideously limp and crappy Eric Bana) and now they have managed to snag Liv Tyler as Betty Ross. Sure Jennifer Connelly is a great actress but being realistic, she was never going to sign-on to do the sequel of what was quite possibly the lowest point of her career. Still, Liv Tyler is a great replacement and she won’t disappoint Hulk fans on the aesthetic front - we all remember Lord of the Rings don’t we?

Transformers is the long-awaited live action (though CGI heavy) action flick based on the cult cartoon and toys from the 80s. Official condensed synopsis: “As the forces of evil seek the key to ultimate power, our last chance for survival rests in the hands of young Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf).” This is all rather true and now, to seal the deal, here is a gallery of production stills and screen caps from the movie.
