First update in a while - but don’t worry, I’m back on the ball again now so you’ll also see the September and October trailer round-ups soon. Anyway, in the nature of relevance, a massive new further extended DVD of King Kong has been scheduled for a November 16th release. This considerably expanded edition will feature an extra 13 minutes of film time, over 40 minutes of deleted scenes and an unruly horde of other extras such as still galleries, featurettes, production diaries - the works. The projected RRP for the North American incarnation is $34.98 whilst the UK version will retail for a slightly steeper £24.99 (although Amazon
are currently offering it for a more reasonable £17.99). “Taxi! Follow that ape!”

The set will feature all of the usual different incarnations of the movie, 3 commentaries from the director and cast etc, 10 deleted scenes, 6 featurettes which cover the story of Oldboy from it’s cinematic inception right through production and up until release, a video diary covering each day of the film’s production entitled “The Autobiography Of Oldboy”, a 35mm film frame card and finally the original Oldboy manga - all of this will be encased in your own very own metal case (joy!). Paramount have revealed that Mission Impossible III will be the first ever movie to get a full release on all 3 disc formats: DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. Scheduled for a US release on October 30, the different versions will offer some unique extras, with the HD-DVD version apparently getting an “enhanced commentary”. As for us here in the UK, there’s been no word on what is going to happen with our November 13 release, whether we’re treated to the new formats or have to make do with the old, it remains to be seen.

Here’s another little snippet of DVD news for you. Creator of the Askewniverse Kevin Smith told Detroit’s Free FM radio station that Clerks II was already set for a December 5th DVD release. According to /FILM Smith disclosed almost no other details, but they expect that there will be the usual making of and behind the scenes extra footage alongside commentaries etc (nothing particularly special then). “Clerks II” opens in theatres on July 21.

As a big fan of Hong Kong action movies myself, it was with excited fervour that I opened this 2 disc special edition of John Woo’s classic “A Better Tomorrow”. Faced with the prospect of a disturbingly stimulating set of extra features, it was a struggle not to abundantly salivate as my excited paws ushered the first disc into the tray. First hurdle down and it was time to sit back and admire the wizardry of a legend in his prime. “A Better Tomorrow” was the film that forged the infamous Chow Yun-Fat/John Woo partnership - a unity that would dominate Asian action cinema for the ensuing decade. The duo essentially made careers for each other, both had a history of hideously mediocre proportions (Woo was stuck directing comedies and Yun-Fat in the world of television) and ABT was the film that effectively brought them both out of their creative slumps and steered them towards greatness.

The creative talent behind “Peace Hotel” is almost overwhelming; a capable up and coming director/writer (Ka Fai-Wai) coupled with two of the biggest names in the Cantonese industry (Chow Yun-Fat and John Woo), one of whom is arguably amongst action cinema’s most respected icons and you seem to have compiled a definite recipe for success. However, some expectations are there to be trodden on and it seems that, from the outset, “Peace Hotel” is a slight departure from Woo and Yun-Fat’s previous work and therefore not in their immediate area of expertise. There’s still a fair bit of martial arts, but the twisted romance that we witness blossoming, is what the film really focuses on.
