A deadly military-developed virus is leaked to the public causing a pandemic and killing everyone and everything, Robert Neville survived, alone. However, unbeknown to him, the rest of the population have been turned into bloodthirsty vampires and, well, you know what kind of awesome action sequences that could provoke! Anyway, I am of course talking about I Am Legend, a film which boasts the most expensive scene of all time ($5m - the scene on Brooklyn bridge) and a rather intriguing storyline. Starring Will Smith (I, Robot, Independence Day), the project went through an unbelievable amount of false starts before getting going and finally, it seems to be pretty much finished and fairly good - thanks to Francis Lawrence. The trailer went live yesterday and can be caught over at Apple Trailers.

God knows how these blithering idiots managed to live to adulthood, but it seems that a bunch of people over at Freestyle Releasing have picked up 3 Uwe Boll films for US distribution. In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale, Postal and Seed are the titles in question and I, for one, am readily opposed to their release anywhere…ever. Uwe Boll has shit on cinema a few too many times and it gives me great pains to witness his terrible work being successful. Here’s a little bit of advice for you: if you ever find yourself in a situation where you may have to watch, or even just glimpse, part of a Uwe Boll film, take both index fingers and drive them through your eyes and ears. I promise you, it’s the right thing to do. Read the rest of this entry »

I hadn’t heard so much as a whisper about this film until this morning, maybe it’s because I don’t really care for Paul Giamatti, but nevertheless, a fairly flashy and exciting trailer has officially been released and I feel it’s my duty to inform you of such an event. As far as I can gather, the film is about a guy named Mr. Smith (Clive Owen - Children of Men, Closer) who takes it upon himself to protect a women and her child from a hired hitman (Giamatti) who wants nothing more than to get the job done. What ensues involves guns and violence - fun, fun fun. Read the rest of this entry »

Hong Kong actor Tony Leung Ka-fai (Dumplings, Election) was today convicted of assaulting Chong Pui-kin, a bus driver, after a traffic accident which occurred in 2002. Leung was ordered to pay HK$40,000 (US$5,120) in damages, which is a considerable amount less than the HK$3.2 million ($410,000) that the driver was originally suing for. Despite ruling in Chong Pui-Kin’s favour, the judge described the assault as “grossly exaggerated” - hence the small fine. This isn’t really big news, but I thought it was pretty interesting nonetheless, I’m a big fan of Leung and his work, so it’s nice to see him get off lightly (not that I’m condoning crime). If the judge’s words are anything to go by, he probably just pinched him anyway. Read the rest of this entry »

With the release date of Live Free or Die Hard (a crappy title if you’re asking me) looming, Bruce Willis has already been out and about spreading rumours that a 5th Die Hard movie could be on the horizon. “Fox is already talking about doing another one.” Willis told journalists at a recent press junket “I told them I would only do it if Len (Wiseman) was involved. And Maggie Q. Oh, yeah…And Justin (Long) of course. We couldn’t do it without Justin.” Of course, I’ll have to see Live Free or Die Hard before I can say whether I’m excited by these possibilities, but it’ll have to be bloody good to convince me to keep pumping money into sequels. Oh well, I’ll no doubt end up getting brainwashed by the trailers anyway - I usually do.

Notorious for scaring audiences with Ringu (The Ring) and Honogurai Mizu no Soko Kara (Dark Water), director Hideo Nakata and producer Taka Ichise are teaming up once again for a new project which is to be partially based on a real Japanese murder case. Current details are rather scarce, but we do know that newcomer Eric Heisserer will pen the screenplay and that 20th Century Fox and Regency Pictures are the companies on board. Any fans of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials trilogy will be excited to learn that a trailer has been released for the first movie adaption in the series, The Golden Compass (based on the book Northern Lights). Handled by the same studio as Lord of the Rings, the trailer begins with a rather well-known golden ring turning into a similarly dazzling compass; no doubt a marketing stunt emphasising what we should be expecting. But, whilst not looking as ‘epic’ as Lord of the Rings, it certainly does look relatively entertaining. The effects appear to be rather spectacular (apart from, perhaps, the polar bear) and Nicole Kidman could be described as agreeable as well. Did I say agreeable? You know what I meant. The trailer is online in various formats over at Yahoo Movies.

Hot on the tail of Stallone’s fairly average revival of the Rocky series, comes his equally unexpected attempt to prolong the life of John Rambo. Rambo 4 (actually entitled John Rambo, but I’ll call it Rambo 4 because that’s what it is) follows a geriatric Stallone as he attempts to save a group of - let’s face it - foolish Christian missionaries who venture into a Burmese war zone in a desperate bid to save innocent civilians. A special 3 and a half minute teaser has been compiled for some of the journalism folk at Cannes and it makes the film look absolutely hilarious. The clip features exploding heads, dismemberment, asphyxiation and some good old fashioned gun play - all of these things are categorised under the ‘bad-ass’ column in my book. Of course, there’s obviously a lot of fake emotion alongside this to lead you into (and give a point to) the action; but we all know that Rambo just likes to kill people for fun anyway. 73 year old director, Roman Polanski, shocked journalists and colleagues today as he stormed out of an important Cannes press conference. In his opinion, the prestigious event - which gathered 32 of the world’s most accomplished directors - was marred by the poor quality of questions from the journalists, who, admittedly, had some rather simple and shallow queries. “This is a rare and unique opportunity to see a gathering of such important directors and it’s a shame to have such poor questions,” Polanski bellowed. “You’re not interested in cinema, you don’t even type. You just transfer things from your computer. I suggest we go for lunch.” Needless to say, the other directors sat still and he left. Well, don’t say Polanski isn’t an exciting character, first he raped someone and now he’s shaking it up in Cannes - what a guy eh?

Despite the first two becoming firm favourites amongst both the public and critics, it seems that the third Shrek film isn’t destined to be as successful, receiving poor reviews across the board. Rotten Tomatoes average rating on the Tomatometer currently stands at a meagre 43%, whilst over at FirstShowing.Net they awarded it 3/10 calling it an “uneven mess”. If I’m perfectly honest I wasn’t enraptured by the first two films, but I thought they were fairly decent, so seeing this one fall flat on its face is a little surprising. First Spider-man and now this, The Bourne Ultimatum and Pirates of the Caribbean had better be kick-ass or my summer will be shit.
