The 60th annual Cannes Film Festival has commenced and opening the proceedings this year was Wong Kar-Wai with his new film My Blueberry Nights. Starring Jude Law, Norah Jones, Tim Roth, Rachel Weisz and Natalie Portman, Blueberry is the story of a young woman who travels across America in search of enlightenment with regard to the rather complicated subject of love - she wants answers to her questions. The critical consensus is not yet confirmed, but I assure you that I shall post any relevant updates with regard to Cannes as soon as I..umm…can. Read the rest of this entry »

A spot from the guys over at twitch, the Crows Zero website has been updated with a new extended teaser trailer. To find the new clip just head to the official Crows Zero site, skip the flash intro movie and click the self explanatory ‘trailers’ button to get the usual choice of sizes, then sit back and relax…for all of about 30 seconds. I’ve actually heard very little about Crows Zero, which is rather inexcusable because I’m a rather big Takashi Miike fan; mainly because I’m in awe at how he can reel off so many incredible films in such short periods of time. Anyway, the teaser is - without sounding like a textbook 80s teenager - awesome. Go and watch it.

After 2001’s decidedly average The One, Jet Li and Jason Statham are now back alongside each other again in the upcoming War. Since 2001 Statham’s rise from supporting actor to full-blown action star has been pretty rapid, with The Transporter franchise taking centre stage and other films such as Crank performing well at the box office. On the other side of the billboard, Jet Li’s career really hasn’t changed much, his name still remains a crowd pleaser and he has headlined in a number of martial arts features such as Hero, Unleashed and Fearless. So ultimately it seems that War is more of a studio money spinner than anything special (I just stated the obvious). Anyway, the film seems to be made up of the same formula we are accustomed to: evil villain (Li: an assassin) versus the virtuous everyman (Statham: FBI renegade - rebel!) with a few flaws but ultimately the grit needed to kick the crap out of the bad guys. Sometime towards the end of last year I posted the news that Brendan Fraser had signed up to do The Mummy 3 and that there had also been a number of other previous cast members linked with the project too. Since then there have been a few developments, the most notable being Rachel Weisz’s recent choice to opt out of the film. This tragic piece of news was met with disappointment by many, but at least someone decent has been drafted in as a replacement. Maria Bello, whom you may remember from A History of Violence or even Coyote Ugly (if you have no taste), will assume Weisz’s old role of Evelyn O’Connell (Brendan Fraser’s wife) and will hopefully bring a similar amount of talent and charisma to the table too. Fortunately she was good alongside old Viggo in A History of Violence so I’m feeling pretty positive about the swap…not that I’m actually excited about this movie, The Scorpion King didn’t exactly get my juices flowing. From the mind of YouTube user SchulteFiaja, here are two short videos depicting some of the worst movie moments of all-time. I can’t say whether these literally are the worst film sequences ever, but I can say that they’re all ridiculously shit and I laughed my ass off at them - I’ll never be able to look at John Barrowman in the same way again. So, prepare to witness some truly deplorable and physically distressing footage from such classic flicks as Shark Attack 3: Megalodon and Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2! Tsui Hark, Ringo Lam and Johnnie To’s Triangle (Tie San Jiao) has finally been given the go-ahead by the Chinese authorities and will now be able to lawfully enter the Official Selection line-up at the 60th annual Cannes Film Festival next week - an outcome not entirely unexpected due to the film’s plot being a paragon of patriotic virtue (that’s a little excessive, I was just saying that the film isn’t socially or politically risqué and felt an unhealthy urge to use the word paragon). IMDB description: Told in three 30-minute segments (each segment with a different director - sort of like Grind House), three friends seek out the buried treasure of a mysterious stranger. Triangle is the first Chinese/Hong Kong film to enter the competition since Lou Ye’s outrageously controversial Summer Palace last year. Read the rest of this entry »

I think we can all breathe a little easier tonight knowing that Amy Winehouse will not be in the next Bond film, Bond 22. During a recent interview she told MTV: “I’m just not an actress … It can’t be true,” Rotten Tomatoes reckon she’ll be on the soundtrack, which I think will be a better fit. Megan Fox should be a Bond Girl hmmm or Monica Belluci or Jessica Biel, the list is too long! If you have an idea about who you reckon should be a Bond girl head over to the contact page and drop me a note (make the message title ‘Bond Girl Vote’), in a week or so I’ll bring together all the entries and compile a top 5 list of wanted Bond girls! Spur of the moment blog ideas = genius feature!

Ever since I first saw Halloween as a young kid, Michael Myers (oh for god’s sake, not Austin Powers) has always scared the absolute piss out of me. I shall never forgive John Carpenter for terrorizing my innocent little mind and forcing me to look over my shoulder at night for fear of a psychopathic killer wearing an ill-fitting rubber mask and wielding a rather sharp (and large) kitchen knife. And now Rob Zombie’s re-make is on the horizon, threatening to rekindle the flame of my traumatic relationship with Mr. Myers. Well, you’d think I could just cast my love for horror movies aside for a moment and avoid the upheaval of childhood fears, but there’s just one problem: the trailer looks awesome. God dammit, why am I such a glutton for punishment? Pfft, catch the trailer over at BDTV (it’s bad-ass, I promise).

The new folks in charge of the rights to the Terminator franchise - Halcyon (no never heard of them either) - have today announced that there is indeed to be more Terminator films on our screens in the near future, three of them apparently. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look Arnie nor James Cameron will be involved, but there is news that the writers behind Terminator 3 have already penned the fourth movie and that Jonathon Mostow is once again on board to direct. The film will ostensibly focus on John Connor and be heavily related to narrative points hinted at in T3. My prediction? Not very good. I mean, Terminator 3 was a bit shit wasn’t it?

Currently being billed as the next Shaun of the Dead, Fido provides a 1950s American take on the rapidly expanding zom-com genre. Starring Billy Connolly (Mrs Brown, The Last Samurai) Fido is the story of a kid called Timmy Robinson whose best friend just so happens to be a 6 foot zombie. In fact zombies are pretty much an every day part of life in Willard, they’ve been domesticated with the help of a collar developed by a company called Zomcon which allows the living to utilize zombies as gardeners, milkmen and whatever else they deem useful. But one day, Fido’s collar malfunctions and he ends up eating the Robinsons’ next door neighbour, what ensues is story of friendship, love and most enticingly, guts. Described by Anagram Pics as “a boy-and-his-dog movie for grown ups” Fido certainly doesn’t look as good as Shaun of the Dead, but the trailer does possess a certain charm and my unhealthy affinity for zombies will no doubt compel me to see it anyway. Catch the trailer over at fidothemovie.com. Read the rest of this entry »
